It's not about loud and it certainly ain't digital but it isn't necessarily as retro as you might think. The Tonebenders sound has a lot of talent behind it mixed in with a careful selection of gear. We'll let them tell you about it because it's all geek to us.

Greg King - Bass:

Amps: I'm all about Ampeg. The company got it's name from an innovative pickup that was designed to work with upright basses. The pickup was known as the 'Amplified Peg' and the company became Ampeg. So these guys were all about bass amplification from the get go. I've played through all the big boys but none satisfy like Ampeg. Currently I use an SVT Pro 3 solid state head (tube preamp) and the all tube SVT VR. The VR is a reissue of an Ampeg classic with 14 separate tubes and hand wired circuitry. It's a beast and I love it.
For cabs I use the Ampeg Classic 4x10, Classic 1x15 and the Classic 8x10. I recently picked up an older Trace Elliott 4X10 cab that has a nice punchy tone.

Bases: My main squeeze, the favored lady in the stable, is a 2008 Fender American Jazz Standard. Cherry Cola Red, passive, after market Custom Shop '60's pickups wth a maple fretboard. Smooth, sexy and plays like a dream. Teamed up with the Ampeg boys, she can go from warm and full to full growling bitch. Sigh, I love her. I also have two Fender Deluxe Jazz basses, a 4 and a 5 string, both with active electronics. Great action and I can dial in any tone I need. Then there's the Eppi's. A great Thunderbird and a Les Paul in cherry wood. The T-Bird has a big, nasty sound that will blow the doors off and the Les Paul is a sophisticated lady with big, round notes. I picked up an Ibanez 5 string on the street for a couple hundred bucks. Funky and mean, you can slap and pop her all night long and she just smiles and asks for more. The Dean acoustic 4 string is for quiet moments around the fire pit singing Kumba Ya… Then there's The Queen. My '62 Hofner. She doesn't come out often but when she does it's very special.

Effects Pedals: Just a Boss Bass Chorus to sweeten up the ballads and slow stuff.
